Amazing Annie Lockee introduces students to the art of throwing pots
Around 5000 B.C. the potter's wheel was invented, attributed to both the Sumerians and the Chinese. The potter's wheel allows the potter to throw even, symmetrical shapes more easily and in much less time. They are thought to have been used even before wheels were used for transportation. There are many different types of potter's wheels, some powered by hands or feet that spin the platter on which the clay sits. Others use treadles, like the foot pumps on old sewing machines and even electricity. This past week Annie Lockee demonstrated the art of throwing pots to an enthusiastic group of art students. Impressed by the magic of it all they uttered loud ooooohs and ahhhhhs.
