A Visit to the Frida Kahlo Museum

Photo of Frida at the Museum

For my 12th birthday I had one wish. To go to the Frida Kahlo Museum in Mexico City.

On Monday when I got back to school I couldn't wait to tell Ms. Bell. She told me the story about the gold dust. During Frida's street car accident a pole went through her body and she was covered in gold dust. The people there thought she might be an angel or some spirit. I think they were right.

We stayed in Roma and our friend Edgar who is a photographer took us to a secret place where artists and writers like to go-Panaderia. The food is delicious and when you are in the Colonia Roma you feel like you are in Paris France. The architecture is called Art Deco and Art Nouveau.

Afterwards we went to Frida Kahlo's Museum in Coyocan. It was a dream come true.

Frida has a garden and we got to see her clothes. In the courtyard was a game where you could spin 3 rectangular cubes to change the dresses Frida was wearing. Inside we saw her braces and corsets because she was injured in a street car accident when she was just 18. One leg was shorter than the other since she was a child because she had polio and she was often in pain. She was a great artist and we saw her studio. She used gigantic paintbrushes and painted in her wheelchair. We also saw her bedroom that had a mirror on the ceiling of her four poster bed. She was married to Diego Rivera, the great Mexican muralist and painter. We saw many of her paintings as well as his paintings. Frida also built a puppet theatre and made all the puppets. Her kitchen was filled with large Mexican pottery and she used little ceramic cups to make a design on the wall of 2 birds holding a ribbon in their beaks.

Annie-thanks for asking about Frida's house. Here is an artist's birdhouse I want to share with you at my blog called The Joy of Making Stuff

We rode Eco Bikes in Roma, Mexico City where we stayed.

Panaderia is a very narrow place in Roma with low ceilings in an old garage that is now a bakery.
You have to wait for a turn because there are only 12 seats [like my birthday] at the counter where you can eat good things

See how they decorate my hot chocolate. Everything can be art-even what you eat.

In front of Frida's blue house at last!

It was my birthday wish to come here and I made it!

This is me as Diego

She painted in her wheelchair and had really big brushes

There is a mirror below the top of her bed she used to paint herself and a calaca slept on top
Her puppet theater-she made the puppets

They are disappearing in Mexico and the music is so fantastic.
